Dental Cleanings and Exams

Professional preventive care for a healthy smile

The Foundation of Dental Health

Professional dental cleanings and exams are the foundation of preventive dental care. These appointments allow us to remove tartar buildup that you can't clean at home, detect problems early before they become serious, and monitor the health of your teeth and gums. The American Dental Association recommends that most people visit the dentist at least twice per year for professional cleanings and exams. At Lincoln Smiles Dental, we focus on making these visits a positive, educational experience that helps you maintain excellent oral health.

What Happens During a Cleaning

A professional dental cleaning is more thorough than anything you can achieve at home. One of our experienced dental hygienists begins by using specialized instruments to remove tartar and hardened plaque from your teeth, both above and below the gum line. We use ultrasonic scalers that vibrate at a specific frequency to break apart tartar deposits without damaging your tooth surface. These instruments are far more effective than a toothbrush at removing buildup in difficult-to-reach areas and below the gum line.

After removing tartar and plaque, we polish your teeth using a rotating tool with a gritty paste that removes surface stains and leaves your teeth smooth and shiny. This polishing also helps remove early biofilm formation that could lead to decay. If you have specific stain concerns, we can discuss advanced stain removal options or professional whitening. After polishing, we apply a fluoride treatment that strengthens your enamel and helps prevent decay.

The entire cleaning process is typically completed in 30 to 45 minutes. Most patients find professional cleanings pleasant and relaxing. If you have sensitive teeth, we can adjust our technique or use desensitizing gel to make the cleaning more comfortable. Our goal is to leave your mouth feeling fresh, clean, and healthy.

The Comprehensive Dental Exam

After your cleaning, Dr. Sepi performs a thorough dental exam. She examines all your teeth carefully, looking for signs of decay, existing restorations that may need replacement, and any structural problems. She assesses your bite to check for alignment issues that could cause problems. She examines your tongue, cheeks, lips, and the roof of your mouth, looking for any abnormalities including signs of oral cancer.

Dr. Sepi evaluates the health of your gums by checking for bleeding, inflammation, and pocket depth. Healthy gums have shallow pockets (1 to 3 millimeters). Deeper pockets may indicate gum disease. She checks for signs of bone loss and assesses your overall periodontal health. She reviews any X-rays and compares current findings with previous exams to detect changes.

If Dr. Sepi identifies any problems, she'll discuss them with you in detail, explaining what the problem is, why it needs to be treated, and what options are available. She may recommend additional treatment or scheduling a follow-up appointment. She'll also provide personalized recommendations for improving your home care based on your specific situation.

Oral Cancer Screening

As part of every dental exam, we perform a comprehensive oral cancer screening. Oral cancer affects thousands of people annually and is sometimes discovered late when it's more difficult to treat. Early detection significantly improves outcomes. We screen for oral cancer at every visit because early detection can literally save your life.

Dr. Sepi examines the inside of your mouth carefully, looking for any red or white patches, unusual growths, or other abnormalities. She checks your lips, tongue, cheeks, gums, and the floor and roof of your mouth. She feels your neck and jaw area for enlarged lymph nodes or other concerning changes. She may use advanced screening technology that enhances the ability to detect early-stage lesions.

If Dr. Sepi notices anything concerning, she'll discuss it with you and may recommend a biopsy or referral to a specialist. Many oral cancers are highly treatable when caught in early stages. Don't skip your dental visits. Regular screenings may catch a problem early enough to prevent serious consequences.

Digital X-Rays in Your Exam

X-rays are an important part of comprehensive dental exams. They allow us to detect problems not visible to the naked eye, including decay between teeth, bone loss, problems below the gum line, and structural issues. At Lincoln Smiles Dental, we use advanced digital X-ray technology that produces clear, detailed images with significantly less radiation exposure than traditional film X-rays.

Digital X-rays are available instantly, so we can review them immediately and discuss findings with you. We take X-rays only when necessary for diagnosis. We use lead aprons and other protective measures to minimize radiation exposure. For most patients, we recommend taking a full set of X-rays every three to five years, with periodic updates as needed based on individual risk factors.

Why Regular Cleanings Are Essential

The ADA recommends dental cleanings and exams at least twice yearly because tartar naturally accumulates between visits no matter how well you brush and floss. Tartar buildup contributes to gum disease and tooth decay. Regular professional cleanings remove this buildup and help prevent serious problems from developing. People who maintain regular cleaning and exam appointments have better long-term dental health and require less extensive treatment overall.

Regular visits also allow Dr. Sepi to detect problems early. A small cavity detected at a regular exam can be treated with a simple filling. If you wait years before your next visit, that small cavity may have progressed to the point where the tooth needs a root canal or extraction. Early detection and treatment saves you money and discomfort.

For patients with gum disease or other risk factors, Dr. Sepi may recommend more frequent cleanings, every three or four months instead of twice yearly. These more frequent visits help manage gum disease and prevent problems from worsening. We'll discuss your individual needs and recommend the appropriate frequency of cleanings and exams for your situation.

Periodontal Assessment

During your cleaning and exam, we assess the health of your gums and supporting bone structure. We measure the depth of the pockets around your teeth and note any bleeding, inflammation, or recession. Gum disease is a common problem that often goes undetected because it's usually painless in early stages. By the time you notice symptoms like bleeding gums or bad breath, the disease may be advanced.

Early detection of gum disease allows us to address it before it progresses. We can improve your home care techniques, recommend more frequent professional cleanings, or suggest more advanced periodontal therapy if needed. Treating gum disease early prevents tooth loss and protects your overall health, as research shows links between untreated gum disease and serious health conditions like heart disease and diabetes.

Regular cleanings and exams are your best defense against gum disease and the complications that arise from it. These visits are preventive care at its best.
