Sedation Dentistry
Overcome dental anxiety with safe, effective sedation options
Comfortable Dental Care, Even With Anxiety
"I've always been scared of the dentist, but never at Lincoln Smiles." Dental anxiety is common and affects millions of people, preventing them from seeking the care they need. The sounds, smells, and sensations of a dental office can trigger fear and panic in people with dental phobia. If you avoid the dentist because of anxiety, you are not alone. The good news is that you do not have to suffer with fear or dental pain any longer. At Lincoln Smiles Dental, we offer sedation options that allow anxious patients to receive the dental care they need while remaining relaxed and comfortable. From the moment you book your appointment to the moment you leave our office, you will always feel comfortable.
Understanding Dental Anxiety and Fear
Dental anxiety exists on a spectrum. Some people feel slight nervousness before appointments but manage fine during treatment. Others experience moderate anxiety that makes them hesitant to schedule appointments but can proceed with care when sedation is offered. Still others have severe dental phobia that causes panic attacks at the thought of visiting the dentist. They may not have seen a dentist in years, leading to serious dental problems. Regardless of where you fall on this spectrum, we have solutions that can help.
Dental anxiety can stem from various sources. Past traumatic dental experiences, including painful procedures or insensitive dentists, often trigger anxiety in patients. Fear of pain, even if you've never experienced it, can be paralyzing. Loss of control in the dentist's chair bothers some people. Others fear judgment about their dental health or embarrassment about the state of their mouth. General anxiety disorder or post-traumatic stress can make dental appointments particularly challenging. Understanding the source of your anxiety helps us choose the best approach to help you feel safe and comfortable.
Whatever the source of your anxiety, it's important to know that your fears are valid and we take them seriously. We won't minimize your concerns or judge you for feeling anxious. We're here to work with you to make dental treatment comfortable and positive. By addressing your anxiety, we can help you get the dental care you need and build more positive experiences with dentistry going forward.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide, commonly called laughing gas, is the mildest form of sedation we offer. It's a colorless gas that you inhale through a small nose mask while you remain awake and aware of your surroundings. Nitrous oxide takes effect within a few minutes and leaves your system quickly after we turn off the flow. Patients typically describe the feeling as relaxed and slightly euphoric, which is how the gas earned its nickname. Some people feel a tingling sensation or hear a humming sound, both of which are normal.
Nitrous oxide is an excellent option for patients with mild to moderate anxiety. It reduces anxiety and makes the appointment feel shorter. It doesn't eliminate pain sensation, so we still use local anesthesia, but it makes you less aware of the procedure and less bothered by what's happening. Nitrous oxide has a long safety record and is one of the most commonly used sedation agents in dentistry.
The advantages of nitrous oxide are numerous. It works quickly and wears off quickly, so you can return to normal activities immediately after your appointment, including driving. It's safe for most patients. It's less expensive than other sedation options. The main limitation is that nitrous oxide provides only mild sedation, so it may not be sufficient for patients with severe anxiety or for extensive procedures.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation involves taking a sedative medication by mouth, typically thirty to forty-five minutes before your appointment. The medication makes you very relaxed and drowsy. You'll remain conscious and able to respond to instructions, but you'll have little awareness of what's happening and often won't remember much about the procedure afterward. This is sometimes called twilight sedation or conscious sedation. Oral sedation provides deeper relaxation than nitrous oxide, making it suitable for patients with moderate to severe anxiety or for more extensive procedures.
Before oral sedation, we'll review your medical history and any medications you're taking to ensure oral sedation is safe for you. We'll give you specific instructions about what to eat and drink before your appointment and what to avoid. You'll need to arrange transportation to and from your appointment since the medication will impair your judgment and reaction time, making it unsafe to drive.
We monitor you throughout your appointment using a pulse oximeter to track your oxygen saturation and heart rate. We're trained in sedation safety and emergency procedures. After your appointment, we'll recover you in our office until the effects of the medication wear off. You'll leave with a responsible adult. You may feel drowsy for the rest of the day, so plan to relax at home after your appointment.
Additional Sedation Options
For patients who need deeper sedation for more extensive procedures, we can discuss additional options during your consultation. Our team will evaluate your medical history, anxiety level, and the procedures you need, and then recommend the sedation approach best suited to your situation. Who Can Benefit from Sedation Dentistry
Patients with dental anxiety are the primary candidates for sedation, but sedation offers benefits for many other situations. Patients undergoing extensive dental work benefit from sedation because they can complete multiple procedures in one appointment rather than needing several appointments. Patients with low pain tolerance or sensitive teeth may prefer sedation even if they're not anxious. Patients with gag reflex or difficulty keeping their mouth open benefit from sedation, which relaxes these reflexes and muscles.
Patients with physical or developmental disabilities that make dental treatment challenging may benefit greatly from sedation. Older patients who need extensive dental work may prefer the convenience of completing treatment under sedation. Patients with very limited time who want to complete multiple procedures in one appointment can benefit from sedation combined with more efficient treatment.
The key is to discuss your concerns with our team. If you have anxiety, have had bad dental experiences, or feel nervous about your appointment, tell us. We will help determine whether sedation would benefit you and which type would be most appropriate for your situation.
Safety of Dental Sedation
Many people worry about the safety of dental sedation, but when administered by trained professionals in a controlled setting, sedation is very safe. All of our team members are trained in sedation protocols and emergency procedures. We conduct a thorough health evaluation before recommending any sedation to ensure you're a good candidate. We take your complete medical history, current medications, and any allergies into account. We discuss any concerns or questions you have.
We use modern monitoring equipment and follow strict safety protocols during any sedated procedure. We have emergency medications and equipment immediately available. Dr. Rahmani and our team are trained to manage any complications that might arise, though serious complications are extremely rare. We use conservative, proven doses of medications that have been used safely for decades in dental and medical settings.
The key to safe sedation is open communication. Tell us about any medical conditions, medications you take, allergies, or concerns you have. Follow all pre-operative instructions carefully. Choose sedation that matches your needs and anxiety level; more sedation isn't always better. Understand that some grogginess or drowsiness afterward is normal. By working together and communicating openly, we can ensure your sedation experience is safe and positive.
Beyond Sedation: Managing Dental Anxiety
While sedation is a powerful tool for managing dental anxiety, other strategies can help. Building trust with your dentist is critical. Take time to visit our office, meet our team, and discuss your concerns before undergoing treatment. A dentist who listens, explains procedures, and respects your concerns goes a long way toward reducing anxiety. We encourage open communication and want you to feel heard.
Relaxation techniques can help. Deep breathing exercises, where you breathe slowly and deliberately through your nose and out through your mouth, activate your body's relaxation response. Progressive muscle relaxation, where you tense and then relax different muscle groups, also helps. Visualization, imagining a calm, peaceful place, can reduce anxiety.
Starting with simpler procedures helps build positive experiences. Nitrous oxide can help you get through your first appointment, allowing you to realize that dental treatment isn't as scary as you feared. Building positive experiences gradually increases your comfort with dentistry. Some patients find they need less sedation as they become more comfortable with our office and team.
