Restoring Teeth With Modern Fillings

A cavity is one of the most common dental problems, and filling a cavity is one of the most straightforward restorative treatments. Yet many people don't understand what happens during filling, what material options exist, or how to care for filled teeth to ensure longevity. At Lincoln Smiles Dental, Dr. Sepideh Rahmani and Dr. Polin Collins can discuss filling options based on your specific situation.

Why Cavities Require Treatment

A cavity is a hole in your tooth caused by decay. Once a cavity forms, it won't heal on its own. The decayed portion must be removed and replaced with a filling to restore tooth structure and prevent further decay. Leaving a cavity untreated allows decay to progress deeper into the tooth, eventually reaching the pulp and requiring root canal treatment.

Material Options for Fillings

Multiple filling materials exist, each with advantages and disadvantages. Silver amalgam (mercury-containing) fillings are durable and relatively inexpensive but are visible and contain mercury, leading many patients to prefer alternatives. Mercury in amalgam fillings is stable and bonded in the tooth, making it safe, though some people prefer avoiding mercury.

Tooth-colored composite fillings match your natural tooth color and are the most popular choice. They bond directly to tooth structure and require less removal of healthy tooth. However, they may not be as durable as amalgam and can stain over time. Composites are excellent for small to moderate cavities.

Glass ionomer fillings are tooth-colored and release fluoride that helps prevent further decay. They're less durable than composite and typically used for small cavities or temporary fillings.

The Filling Process

Filling a cavity typically takes 20 to 30 minutes. Your dentist numbs the tooth and surrounding area with local anesthetic. Once numb, the dentist removes decayed tooth structure using a dental drill. The remaining tooth is cleaned and prepared to receive the filling material.

For composite fillings, the dentist applies the material in layers, hardening each layer with a special light before applying the next layer. This allows precise shaping to match your natural tooth. The filling is then polished and adjusted so your bite feels comfortable.

Caring for Your Filling

Fillings are durable but not permanent. How long a filling lasts depends on the material, the location, and your oral habits. Composite fillings typically last 5 to 10 years. Amalgam fillings often last 10 to 20 years.

To maximize filling longevity, maintain excellent oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing prevent new cavities from forming around your existing filling. Avoid chewing on hard objects like ice or hard candy, which can crack fillings. Grinding your teeth can stress fillings, so discuss nightguard protection with your dentist if you grind.

When Fillings Need Replacement

Fillings wear out over time or can become damaged. Signs a filling needs replacement include visible damage or cracking, filling falling out, discomfort or sensitivity, or dark staining around the filling indicating new decay.

Replacing a filling is straightforward, similar to placing a new one. Your dentist removes the old filling and any new decay that may have developed, then places a new filling.

Preventing Cavities in the First Place

While fillings are effective, preventing cavities is preferable. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, floss daily, limit sugary foods and drinks, and visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and exams. These simple habits prevent the vast majority of cavities.
